Mit 62 verdrückten Hotdogs innerhalb von zehn Minuten hat der US-Amerikaner Joey Chestnut gestern zum fünften Mal in Folge das traditionelle Wettessen auf der New Yorker Insel Coney lsland gewonnen.
Der 27-Jährige lag damit hinter seinem eigenen Rekord von 68 Hotdogs zurück, schlug den Zweitplatzierten aber mit einem Vorsprung von neun Würsteln.
Bei den Frauen siegte Sonya Thomas mit 40 verschlungenen Hotdogs. Beide Gewinner erhalten jeweils 10.000 Dollar (rund 6.800 Euro). Der Wettbewerb findet jedes Jahr am 4. Juli statt, dem Nationalfeiertag der USA.
Chestnuts Erzrivale Takeru Kobayashi konnte in diesem Jahr nicht antreten, weil er sich weigert, einen Exklusivvertrag mit dem Ausrichter des Wettbewerbs, der Major League Eating, zu unterzeichnen. Außer Konkurrenz verdrückte der Japaner unter Wettbewerbsbedingungen 69 Hotdogs.
